Gower Heritage Centre
The Gower Heritage Centre is a nice way to spend an afternoon. The centre is built around restored 12th century water powered corn and saw mill, with exhibits of antique farm machinery a couple of craft shops and a mini woolen mill.
There is puppet making, pottery workshops and duck races. The cafe serves hot food and has indoor and outdoor seating with a mini soft play area for toddlers and a small covered pedal tractor rink which keeps your little ones entertained whilst you enjoy a bowl of Cawl, (a traditional Welsh stew often made with lamb and leeks). There are also animals to entertain the kids, including pigs, rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs, geese and often dependent on the time of year lambs, and chicks which, if you are lucky, you can watch hatching in the incubator. The fish pond was a revelation to my three year old, a handful of fish food brought a tempest of fish to the surface. The wooden play area which set in a giant sand pit with mini wooden diggers is another distraction for the kids. The Centre plays host to numerous music festivals and an annual cider festival and is a good base from which to walk up the Parc Cwm Valley and explore the Parc Cwm long cairn.
Otherwise known as the Parc le Breos burial chamber, the Parc Cwm long cairn is a partly restored megalithic chambered long barrow. Further up the valley are the Cathole Cave and Llethryd tooth cave, which have been used from Mesolithic to Medieval times. This secluded valley is a beautiful, tranquil place to visit surrounded by 500 acres of woodland. You may often find you have the whole valley to yourself. Across the South Gower road from the Gower Heritage Centre is the entrance to the footpath which takes you up the valley to Three Cliffs Bay, a highly recommended walk which follows the river valley to the sea.
